Restorative stretches for the end of the day

A floor sequence to unwind the hips and back before sleep.

Restorative stretches for the end of the day

By evening the body has been folded into chairs and screens for hours. A few restorative shapes — supported, slow, and held — let the tissues release what the day asked them to hold.

Work close to the floor. A gentle reclined twist, knees drifting to one side; a supported forward fold; a wide-legged rest. Stay long enough that the muscle stops guarding and finally lets go.

This is not a stretch to win. It is a stretch to arrive at sleep already halfway relaxed.

A few reminders

  • Hold each shape for several slow breaths.
  • Use a cushion under the hips or knees.
  • Warm, dim light helps the body downshift.

Should stretching hurt?

No. Discomfort is fine; sharp pain is a signal to back off.

How close to bedtime?

Twenty to thirty minutes before sleep works well for most people.
