Balance: the quiet strength most of us skip

Why standing on one leg is more useful than it looks.

Balance: the quiet strength most of us skip

Balance is not a party trick. It is a daily insurance policy — the difference between catching yourself and falling, between confident stairs and cautious ones.

The training is refreshingly simple. Stand on one foot while the kettle boils. Rise onto the toes and lower slowly. Close the eyes for a breath and feel the small muscles wake up and negotiate.

Because it needs no equipment and almost no time, balance is the easiest strength to build and the easiest to neglect. Choose to keep it.

A few reminders

  • Fix your gaze on one still point.
  • Keep a chair within reach at first.
  • A little wobble is the muscle learning.

Is balance training safe for older adults?

Yes, and especially valuable — begin near a support and progress gently.

How long until I improve?

Most people notice steadier balance within a few weeks of daily practice.
